During class I went on a field trip to visit the work of Scholastic Art Award winners held at the Visual Arts Center. I was impressed with much of the work, all the students were certainly deserving, but I was also a bit disappointed with the lack of representation. Don’t get me wrong, there was a ton of representation in the background of students as well as including many students of color, but there were barely any abstract works and virtually no non-objective paintings chosen, which was disheartening. I noticed that the judges tended to favor realism, and particularly self-portraits more than anything else. from this experience, I learned that art competitions are often like this, and sometimes the best you can do is keep submitting your work for entry.
